Short-Term Disability Insurance Explained

When you consider the potential injuries you can sustain while off the job and on your own time, choosing to protect your income earning ability with NJ disability insurance may seem like a very wise decision. Although disability insurance policies may have many variations, there are only two main categories – long-term and short-term coverage.

Typically, short-term disability insurance pays a part of your regular income if you become ill or disabled and are incapable of working for a short period of time. This doesn’t include on the job injuries or illness, which is usually covered by workers compensation insurance. Depending on the policy, this type of insurance may provide coverage for a few weeks or up to two years.

A short-term disability policy may kick in as soon as 14 days after an injury, but it may be longer for an illness. This is because an illness needs to be proven serious enough to be disabling. Many short-term disability insurance policies also provide coverage for maternity leave, but you should read the terms and conditions carefully as policies may differ.

A long-term policy for extended disability and illness coverage may be something to consider, if the worst were to happen to you in an accident, for instance, and you couldn’t return to work.
