No Power? What Now?

The weather! Between the rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice if the power goes out, here are some things to remember:

•Do not call 911 unless it is an emergency. That number should ONLY be used in case of an emergency or injury.
•Watch for downed power lines. Call 911 and your utility company. DO NOT GO NEAR FALLEN POWER LINES.
•Listen to the radio or TV to find out when the power might be restored.
•Dress warm. Wear multiple layers and a jacket. Gloves and winter hats are essential.
•Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer unnecessarily. Food inside should stay cold for hours if the door is left closed.
•Take a warm shower to increase body temperature. Hot water tanks, even if electric, will stay warm for hours.
•Be aware of power surges. Shut down power strips and only use essential appliances. Power down computers and sensitive electronics to avoid damage.
•If you have a generator, check that it’s fueled and properly installed. Transfer switches installed by an electrician are best. Only power what you absolutely need.
•If using space heaters, only use UL safety rated models. Buy one with a thermostat and auto shut-off. Never leave heaters unattended and keep clear of combustibles.
•Use your fireplace and remember to open the flue. DO NOT USE kerosene heaters, BBQs, or any outdoor heater indoors. They produce harmful levels of carbon monoxide which can be deadly.
•Be prepared to shelter in place. Have at least a 3-4 day supply of food, water, and emergency supplies. Don’t forget essential medicine, child care supplies, batteries and flashlights.
•Check on your elderly neighbors, and those who may be reliant on powered medical equipment. Make sure they are dressed appropriately. Consider moving them to get the best care.
•If you have to go out, drive carefully. Remember that traffic signals may be down during a power outage. Consider each intersection to be a four-way stop and drive defensively.
