Halloween Safety Tips

You have your costume all set and the candy by the door just waiting for the first trick-or-treater of the year.  You have some scary movies ready to watch, and you have a few friends coming over to help with all the Halloween festivities.  But what else should you be thinking about this Halloween?  Safety should be one of your top priorities during this holiday.  Here are some Halloween safety tips to help keep everyone safe:A girl and boy trick or treating

  • Make sure your home’s exterior is well lit.  Keep lights on outside so that not only you can see people approaching your house, but they can see their way as well.
  • Keep pathways clear to avoid any accidents or injuries.
  • While it may be tempting to prank or scare trick-or-treaters, you might want to rethink that decision.  Accidents can easily happen when a person is scared or surprised.
  • Think about what’s in your candy bowl.  While it is not your responsibility to know everyone’s allergies, it is always a good idea to provide treats with a clear ingredient list on the packaging.  If you have the ability to stop someone from unknowingly eating an allergen, you should.
  • If you or your children are out and about on Halloween, follow the same safety as you would any other time:
    • Do not drink and drive.
    • Be aware of extra pedestrian traffic.
    • Do not knock on doors where you do not feel safe.
    • Travel with at least one other person at all times.
    • Do not eat treats or candy from unknown sources.
    • Bring a flashlight and wear reflective clothing.
    • Follow curfews set forth by your community.
    • Do not go into anyone’s home you do not know.

We hope you have a very enjoyable and safe Halloween this year!
