NJ Statewide Distracted Driving Crackdown

U Text, U Drive, U Pay is no April fools joke.  Effective April 1st, the 2018 enforcement campaign includes NJ State and local Police cracking down on distracted driving.  Funded by $1 million in grants for additional patrols, NJ is one of four states to receive federal grants this year in the fight against distracted driving.

The definition of distracted driving is more than just texting while driving.  Text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, so it is by far the most distracting,” according to the state. Tickets, however, can be issued for:

  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player
